Spring Arrives!

It is official, Spring has finally arrived! At least according to the calendar. Our temps have been running in the high twenties and they are once again calling for low teens this weekend but the 10 day forecast now includes high fifties and APRIL! It will not be long until we will be able to start tell those “Ole Timer” stories about the winter of 2013/14. Everything seems to be slowly making the transformation to the warmer temps. The ice and ice dams are slowly melting away and the mud while everywhere seems to be getting a bit firmer everyday. The buds on the soft maple trees are getting close to popping and there are several wildflowers starting to emerge on the South slopes. I have been spending a bit more time on the shed hunting and have now found four complete sets and several singles. It gets easier walking and more enjoyable everyday! The deer all have a sort of ragged look to them now because they are starting to shed their winter hair. Perfect timing for the birds building their nest. Our resident red tailed hawk is now sitting on her nest and the male can be seen bringing her new materials for the remodeling project. Interesting fact, they normally do not pick up fallen branches but opt instead to break them off of the trees themselves. I suspect it is easier to keep them moving in mid-air than it is to lift them off the ground. Reports of steelhead catches have started to come in with more regularity and with any luck I will have a personal report for everyone this weekend. They have also been attacking the mouth of the rivers with a Canadian ice-breaker. They are hoping to open them up enough to allow the remaining ice to flow out into Lake Erie before our next spring rain.
