The Time is Now!

Late October can throw you any weather here in NE Ohio and this week has not let us down. The hunt started with temps in the low seventies and finished with the coldest day of the fall so far, 29 degrees. The trophy bucks also showed us some peaks and valleys. As you can imagine the 29 degree morning pushed them over the peak and into full blown pre-rut activity! The longest part of the hunt was in the fact that the younger bucks were doing most of the chasing and while we were seeing bucks not many of them were mature bucks. But as I like to say, these young bucks are like bullpen catchers at the World Series. They may warm up a lot of does, but very few of them will ever get to play in the game!
Once the temperatures broke, the mature bucks decided it was time for their push and Rich was able to make a quick shot on a great trophy buck that was now involved in the “game”. His aim was perfect and as we started to follow-up on the trail the skies opened up and we were treated to a great rain/sleet mix. The trail was short but the rewards were great as we found our third buck of the season that crested the 300” mark! What an exciting end to a full 3 ½ days of hunting.
The weather is supposed to continue to be more normal as we move into November and if you hunt whitetails in Ohio you know this next week will also mark the official start of the rut in NE Ohio. The next two weeks are wide open for activity and the only advice I can offer is to be in the woods as much as possible. Time, duration, temperature, and weather be damned! Get out in the tree, you can’t see a trophy buck from your couch!
