We had our 2017 deer hunting season start off with a great father and son hunt. Dan brought his nine year old son Chap last week and we had him shooting our crossbow within a couple of hours. He is a natural when it comes to shooting and was hitting the bulls eye shortly after arriving. A little time practicing with our 3D target for placement and he was ready to hit the stand. It is always a challenge when you are heading out with a youngster and asking them to sit perfectly still for any long period of time. Chap handled the task very well and we had the chance to watch several smaller bucks and does the first evening. The time watching always helps the nerves when it comes time to make the actual shot. Our chance came on the second evening and he made a perfect 25 yard shot. The buck only went about sixty yards and Chap had a great trophy buck!
When you deer hunt deer in Ohio in January you never know what you might have for weather. Ours was perfect for this hunt and we enjoyed everything from eighteen degrees, freezing rain and sleet to sunshine and sixty-seven degrees. Just what a good southern boy would order right? No actually he wanted snow and we let him down on that one. As long as the whitetail bucks cooperate our hunters always go away happy!
