May Closing

It is hard to believe that we are getting to the end of May already! The past week has been absolutely gorgeous here weather wise and included a great day to remember all of our military people past and present. THANK YOU! They are the reason that we afford our many freedoms and rights in this great Country.
The nice weather has also exploded our spring food plots and the oats and clover are now covering most of the ground and should be holding in any moisture that we might be receiving. Our older clover plots have been mowed once and probably will need it again within the next 7-10 days. If you have clover or grass plots it is important to keep them cut as the deer prefer younger fresh growth over older more mature plants. I normally try to cut them once 80-90% of the plants have bloomed. I do not think they can be over cut. (Make sure if you are cutting this time of year that you walk the plot first to check for fawns and other young critters.)
Our bucks are looking great and continue to add growth every day to their antlers. Some of them are spreading out the main beams and we saw one huge buck this week that was already 3-4” beyond his ears! It is always exciting to see the bucks and try guessing how they will turn out come fall. Some jump out early in the spring and others finish stronger in the late summer. Hopefully we will have photos for you soon.
We have not seen any fawns yet but I am sure that there are some out here. The first arrivals almost always come in late May and continue thru June. The first couple of weeks you have to catch them feeding otherwise they are pretty well hidden during the day.
Last year the Ohio Department of Natural Resources declared the black racer as the official snake for Ohio. Apparently the word has gotten out! We have seen three great black racers this past week ranging from five feet to over six feet. They will get your heart pumping when you first see them but they are cool to watch after your initial shock.
