Summer Turn

We are over the hump of what most people (with anything to do with schools) consider as half way thru summer! It is never a fun thing to consider if you have children or if you are a teacher but if you are deer hunter it is time to get motivated! Now is the time to get those trail cameras out. The bucks of summer should have at least the major portion of their growth done and you can get an idea of where you might start hunting this fall. July is also good time to start regularly shooting your bow or even practicing with your riffle, shotgun, or crossbow. If you have any issues that need repairs now is a great time to discover them as most shops are still slower. You can get in and out before the last minute crowd. If you are planting fall food plots then you should have them done in the next two weeks if you are located in NE Ohio. Much later and you will probably run into frost issues before they have a chance to mature. How about a trip to all of your

to double check them before season? You will always find some sort of surprise that needs attention. (Straps need replaced, pull up rope has gone to the squirrels, and bees have built a nest under your seat.) This is a perfect time to correct any problems and still allow time for deer to settle down before you are serious about hunting. Now you have an idea of what we are doing with all of our spare time!
Our bucks continue to shine and the mature bucks are looking exceptional again this year. We spent a small amount of stand time this week because of some cooler temps and it paid off. We saw a total of four trophy bucks and anyone of them should make a hunter happy! One has a perfect 6x6 frame with split brow tines and nothing else extra. Looked like he could be in the 180-200” range and all typical. Another one had a small tine starting to form under his right main beam. That’s right…a drop tine! It is located in the perfect spot directly under his T-3 and it still has plenty of time to grow. They are still in full velvet and growing so it is way early to start making estimates but it currently looks like another exciting fall at Oak Ridge!
