Double Check

The fall seems to be moving in on us quickly in NE Ohio and that means it is time to take a double check on your stands and hunting area. The last two mornings have brought us low fifties for temps and geese in the morning air. If you throw in the pre-season football games and small flocks of black birds getting ready to migrate you might think it is already September! It is a good idea if you are planning to hunt Ohio deer this season that you remember how quickly things can change. We were making a move with the Trophy Trailer and checking stands for a second time this past weekend when we discovered a new and growing bee’s nest! Remember when you are doing your routine checks not only to check your immediate hunting area but also the routes you take in and out of the woods. Imagine knocking into this nest in the dark one morning. Ours was located maybe three feet off the ground and hanging right in our path!

These cooler mornings are also showing up in some of our trail camera photos as the velvet is starting to get lighter in color and appears tighter. Most of the trophy bucks are finished growing now and it is just a matter of time before that velvet starts coming off. We have not seen any evidence of hard antlers yet in the pictures but would not be surprised if they start to show up this week. We have had a few photos of mature bucks that are almost totally in their winter’s coats now. I hope they don’t know something we don’t about the weather being cold again this year!
