There may not be a more enjoyable time of year to hunt whitetail deer in Ohio. The frosty mornings combined with the leaves changing color, the bugs disappearing, and the whitetail deer beginning the rut! The trophy bucks are all hard antler by now and the rubs and scrapes can be found in many locations. The sound of antlers clashing can be heard in the early evenings and the fights are beginning to get more meaningful with each battle.
Now is also the time of year to be using your calls and rattling antlers. I normally prefer to only grunt and bleat when I have a visual on the buck. If I can see him I can tell how he is reacting to my calls. Some of the lesser bucks will be shy if not scared off by aggressive grunts. I do not like to do a lot of rattling but the next three weeks would be the best time to do it. I will also avoid trying to call once the deer is getting close enough to see me. This goes for does as well as bucks. If you spook the deer that is under your stand, it will most likely take all others with it when it exits. Good luck hunting the pre-rut!
