After a long week with no hunters we finally moved back on track when Richard arrived this last Wednesday. The weather had warmed up a little for us but there were scattered showers and the moon was waning. Our hunt started with us in the Trophy Trailer early and we were quickly rewarded as two younger bucks came past us but decided to spar for about fifteen minutes directly outside of the stand. They provided us with quite a show and helped move our time along. The acorns are covering the ground now and as I had hoped they have the deer travelling our ridges as they transition into the main sanctuary for the day. The buck we had been watching for finally made a quick appearance as he pushed a doe into our area. He worked a scrape just down the ridge from us and then began looking for his doe again. As he circled our location he hit our downwind side and showed us how important scent control can be for a hunter. Before he made his hasty departure he was kind enough to blow for us completely clearing the ridge.
The evening hunt was moved to the Ramp Patch Stand and appeared to be another beautiful evening of watching leaves drift to the ground. We had one smaller buck and a doe with two fawns work the food plot but no good bucks. There was even an opossum that took advantage of our hard luck and stole one of the apples for his dinner. The hunter with patients does often times get rewarded though and with fifteen minutes left of shooting time we spotted a great buck. This trophy buck had a six by six main frame and split brows. As finally presented us with a shot as daylight was waning and Richard connected on a beautiful 217” main frame typical buck.
Mid October is a great time of year to hunt Ohio trophy bucks but it is also just a great time to visit and enjoy our great county. We worked in a couple of trips around Ashtabula County that included dinner on Lake Erie, seven of our covered bridges, the winery area, and several Amish attractions. Sharing two days with Richard, his wife and mother was a wonderful time for us and our Oak Ridge family has now been extended to Arkansas!
