Peak Rut Snow

The past week has proven the old saying “If you don’t like the weather in NE Ohio just wait..”. We started the week off with temperatures in the low seventies with sunshine and it had pushed high enough that it was beginning to slow the movement of our bucks. It gets really tough to chase all day and night when it is warn and you are wearing your winter coat! And then the bottom fell out on Thursday. Temps dropped into the twenties and the lake effect snow found us for the first time this season. We received about six or seven inches overnight on Thursday and what a difference it made for our bucks. The final push for the rut is back on now and it should start to taper back into a more normal pace by mid-week.

If you are an archery hunter and spend your time hunting Ohio trophy bucks then this can be a frustrating time of year. Yes you can see some great trophy bucks but odds are they will be locked onto that” hot doe” and not give you much of a chance for a good shot. If you are lucky enough to find one between does he should readily respond to your can call or grunt. The chances of them being free from does should increase as the week progresses so stay in the woods.
