We have started off our December in the same way that we spent our November with wild swings in the weather! We have already had rain, snow and sunshine. Temperatures have ranges from the low twenties to the high fifties. Welcome to deer hunting in Ohio!
Once again we spent first part of the week hunting for the “Bashful Buck” and once again we sent a hunter home without even getting a glimpse of him! After spending four full days on stand we have rescheduled one more time and hopefully the third time will be the charm?
Our second group this week consisted of a great father and son team that we were able to share another exciting hunt for a “first buck”. Arthur had not hunted with his father in over fifteen years and they are currently separated by the length of the United States! Arthur Jr is living in California and Arthur III lives in Massachusetts. They were able to spend three days together with us on the hunt. Our secondary rut has ramped up to what is probably its peak and it provided us with plenty of excitement. We had several nice bucks within range of the stand that never presented us with an opportunity. Finally we had a buck that had passed us respond to the “bleat can”. On the second call he came on a rope back to us. He paused only briefly and had started to exit when we were able to stop him perfectly with the grunt call. After a well-placed shot Arthur had taken his first trophy whitetail buck! A perfect 6x6, main frame typical buck that had only two extra stickers. What an exciting time it is when you are allowed to share in that magical moment that is a “First Buck”!
