Great Start to the New Year

What a way to start off our new year! Jack who has become a big part of our Oak Ridge family joined us back in mid-December for a buck hunt. We had seen the “Double Beam Buck” on previous outings and decide that he would make a great trophy buck for him. After a long afternoon on stand we spotted a buck out about a hundred yards and after the normal twenty minute “buck approach” he was broadside at thirty-three yards. On the shot from Jack’s Horton Vision the lumenok lighted arrow flew a good eight inches under the buck! This was not exactly what we had prepared for and it started us checking our equipment. When we arrived back at the lodge we placed a target at 33 yards, shot with a field tip and bullseye! Next we tried a broadhead and barely hit the target. We then tried my identical crossbow and same results. Also when we went to the lumenoks they would move our shots two to four inches either right or left with each shot and usually not the same for both of us. To say the least we would stress the importance of double checking your equipment. Jack shoots his bow more than anyone I know and still had the miss. We discovered that the type of movable blade broadhead he was using was creating the issues. The blades were opening as the arrow was fired. We also discovered that the lumenoks need to be exactly reset to a horizontal position or they can change the flight right to left.

After several full days on stand, one miss, two hours of trouble shooting, finally regaining our confidence and we were given our second chance. The “Double Beam Buck” worked his way in toward the stand and as he moved away a short bleat stopped him long enough at 28 yards. This time the shot was true and after about sixty yards we had our hands on this great looking buck! What a great way to start off our 2015 year!
