Spring?

I know we are still a week away from the formal arrival of spring but there are some critters in NE Ohio that are getting very anxious. They must be getting “Den Fever” either that or they are getting hungry. This week I have seen two raccoons, two opossums, several chipmunks, and one garden snake. All of which were on top of the 8-10” of snow we still have in most places. I actually brought the little snake into my office and when he warmed up he started his motor again. The days are getting longer and the sun is getting stronger everyday so there is light at the end of the tunnel!

The rivers are rising quickly and the ice is breaking up slowly. It is still creating ice dams as it moves toward the lake. The early fishing is still a good week plus away and then we may have to wait on the steelhead to run. I will keep you posted.

The turkeys are breaking up already but I fear it is more for the need of food. I have not heard a gobble yet but they probably are gobbling. There have been several reports of turkeys being found dead and this could be wide spread in our area. They are not in the clear yet but at least now they should be able to find some openings in the snow cover. We need a drier spring to help the poults make it thru this year to help our population.
