Red Wings

Signs keep pointing to an early spring and this week alone we have hit seventy degrees twice already. We have heard the peepers two nights, heard two different woodcocks doing the spring “air dance”, and spotted red winged black birds. If we turn back to cold weather now there are going to be some very disappointed critters! The soft maple trees are turning red from the bursting buds and the maple syrup season seems to coming to a close already for this year. Bring on those early flowers!
The turkey birds are trying to break up a little and we have been watching the gobblers strutting. The gobbling is building more every morning and it will not be long before they continue later into the mornings.
The steelhead waters are rising again this week with our warm rain. The trip to the rivers yesterday revealed some die hard fishermen wading marginally fast waters but we did not see any fish caught. Once the current warmer water reaches the lake it should start to bring them in to the rivers in better numbers. We did not see any fish in the smaller streams yet.
