Early April

As we close out a mild March by NE Ohio standards it is hard to believe that we are just now starting April. Many people are already cutting the grass, most of the early flowers are blooming, a hint of green can be seen throughout the woods already. We are running what feels like a month behind on the calendar?

The bucks have all shed now and you can begin to see the signs of growth already on some of the bucks that dropped earliest. All of the deer are looking shaggy as they begin to change from the brown coats of winter into the redder coats of summer. The turkeys are showing up in smaller flocks now and in just a few short weeks we will begin turkey season. The steelhead are trickling in and out this spring and it has been a very slow season for them. I do not think that we are going to see the well-defined “run” that we normally would have in mid to late April. Some of the regulars are saying it is over already and the spawn has finished. Time will tell but it sure feels like a milder spring to begin our early April.
