Dog Days?

The weather in NE Ohio has turned extremely dry and now we are hitting the mid-nineties for temperatures. Does this mean that we are going to have the dog days of summer early or are we in for a really hot summer? The food plots are holding up okay so far but we need to get a good soaker soon to keep them growing.

The bucks are heading into the second half of their growing season and by now they should all have their base frames and are just adding the length to the main beams, tines and stickers. Some of our bucks are already showing great drop tines and it looks like our fall season should have some great trophy bucks. The black flies have faded as the warmer temperatures arrived but they have now produced the deer flies. This means less volume but bigger welts! The flies of summer add a lot of stress to all deer but a dry summer can be a factor for the EHD midges! Let’s hope it starts raining soon so that we do not have to deal with EHD losses this year.
